porch progress

The framing inspection on the porch went well, and we’ve* since put down the tongue&groove floor and rebuilt the bottoms of the columns.

digging for and pouring footers

The crumbling brick piers that were supporting the porch went down about a foot into the dirt and then just stopped. This time around we’ve dug fairly substantial holes and filled them with cement.

In addition to the opossum mummy, we also pulled a few 1960s/1970s bottles out from under the porch.

At the end of day 1, the demolition is done and the truck is full of stuff to take to the dump. We found 4 or 5 old soda bottles and a mummified opossum.

The newly painted shed now has a bamboo screen and wee climbing hydrangea just barely growing up the side.

the view from the roof

That last heavy rain had the roof obviously leaking for the first time in a while. I went up yesterday to scope out the condition of the gutters and the rest of it, and took a few pictures while I was there.

Out yard is so much less dreary than than back in March. We planted day lillies, hostas, and ghost ferns this weekend, and started painting the shed.

having moved a fence…

The wall has been finished and the fence, with teamwork, cursing, and bleeding, has been moved back. The old parking pad and the sloping part of the yard that used to be orphaned to the alley are now inside the fence.

Our 2 remaining “before summer starts” projects are still hanging, though we ought to make some good progress on the retaining wall over the long weekend. We’ve been working on the yard a lot, though, including planting 2 pretty big trees.
