the view from the roof
That last heavy rain had the roof obviously leaking for the first time in a while. I went up yesterday to scope out the condition of the gutters and the rest of it, and took a few pictures while I was there.

a bamboo screen
The newly painted shed now has a bamboo screen and wee climbing hydrangea just barely growing up the side.

Hackberry tree
After planting the new maple and sycamore trees, I’ve become interested in knowing more about the trees that are already established around the edge of the yard. One of them, it turns out, is some sort of Hackberry.

front porch rebuild!
Jim from Reveal, Inc and I will be rebuilding the flooring and supports of our front porch over the next 2 or 3 weeks.

porch demo w/ mummified opossum
At the end of day 1, the demolition is done and the truck is full of stuff to take to the dump. We found 4 or 5 old soda bottles and a mummified opossum.

In addition to the opossum mummy, we also pulled a few 1960s/1970s bottles out from under the porch.

digging for and pouring footers
The crumbling brick piers that were supporting the porch went down about a foot into the dirt and then just stopped. This time around we’ve dug fairly substantial holes and filled them with cement.

a realization
Our house is older than the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii.
