the beginning of a picket fence

We started working on the picket fence out front this weekend and it being all unfinished will taunt us every time that we leave the house until at least next weekend.

building a picket fence

We ran 12 posts across the front of the house, seven feet apart except closer where the corners will be. The photo doesn’t show it but we ran one of the rails the width of the yard already and shortened most of the posts the the final height.

We still need to run the second rail and figure out how we’re going to handle the pickets. Nothing pre-made isn’t ugly, though we think we’ve found something that we might be able to modify and use. Theoretically, that’ll all happen next weekend and then sometime after that it’ll get painted.

And then we’ll have to run the 2 side lengths of the fence. Those will be shorter runs, but will have to accomodate the slope of the yard. Three more weekends, maybe?

Make your own pickets! Or, buy the individual pickets, rather, and make your own picket fence. It’s a pain-in-the-ass, but it looks 300 times better and will last 16 times as long as prefab. Of course, my yard looks smaller than yours.
