this is a safety cover

We had to finish a few details left behind from our barter with the elctricians; now we just need to arrange for and pass an inspection…

We had electricans out here just about 18 months ago to rough-in the wiring for downstairs. We’ve got a mix of knob&tube and cloth-wrapped wiring and it was nice to see the clean&safe new wires strung along the walls and ceiling. The walls were already down, so their work seemed to go smoothly.

One of their decisions came back to catch us a little. We’d left the baseboard molding in place, and instead of drilling and running the wire through the studs, the electricians just dropped the wire behind the baseboard. When we pulled the baseboard later on, we were told that wiring wouldn’t pass inspection like that. The remedy was to pull the wiring out and drill the studs, or notch the studs and cover them with protective metal nail plates. We went with the notching, which we finished up this weekend.

We now have to get this electrical work inspected by the city. About this inspection we have some trepidation, not knowing what is really involved and what all could be determined to be wrong (and then what would we do?). So we’ll be calling tomorrow to arrange the inspection…
