two new carpentry words
In researching an upcoming project, we learned two new words: cripple stud and king stud.

A cripple stud (or jack stud) is not a full height stud, but is a load-supporting stud that travels from the underside of the header to the sole plate and is sandwiched together with the king stud. (In the world of exceptional education, this would be ‘a stud with a disability’.)
The king studs flank a door or window opening, running without break from the sole plate to the top plate plate.
