round fireplace covers

Ever since our first cold month in the house, we’ve been keeping our eyes open for the cast-iron round fireplace covers that we need.

We’ve seen a few squared covers and many more hacks with tin, cardboard or cement. Yesterday, on a neighborhood Christmas house tour, we saw a few beautiful fireplace covers that were exactly what we are missing.

None are the right size for our opening.

I have something kinda like that. Except if you touch it, the whole thing come crashing down. I wonder if it’s supposed to be secured to the fireplace in some way…hmm….
I wish our fireplace/chimney was lined. It’d be so nice to have a fire in it…legally.

    Gary,

Thanks for the link. That is the only place we’ve seen with the inserts! We’ve got the horse shoe, but we’re entirely lacking the inserts (the inner piece as shown here).

Jenne, We don’t use ours, either. The idea is a little terrifying, actually. One day, maybe… The horseshoes that we have up are well attached, and the insert looks like it would hook up to couple of slots on either side. The 2 mantles that we’ve taken apart were attached to the chimney bricks by a kind of wire.

The insert looks like the perfect job for a plasma cutter. 16 guage with some kind of trim welded on probably would work. I’m about to cut a four foot circle with a wedge missing to make a cone for a large storage tank. Maybe then I’ll have the confidence to do something like this. Have any artwork?

Is it something that you could have re-castings made? If its cast iron, perhaps you could find someone to make a mold of it and make new covers for you.

Cast Iron fireplace covers like yours were very popular in England, so you might try looking there. Here is one example that might help. http://www.castironfires.com/

Here is a website for a complete gas fireplace insert that has a cast iron round cover (Windsor model). I am placing 4 into a Vitorian remodel in Denver.
