house inspectors

Today’s local paper has an article, ‘Giving a house a physical’, about the job that house inspectors do.

Early on in the process of looking at this house, we hired a house inspector to come take a look. We knew that things were messed up, but we thought that we’d be able to use the report as a good starting point towards planning our work here. The day of the inspection, the guy showed up, took one look at the house and refused to do the inspection. This was back in our ‘jungle and spiders’ phase, so his reluctance was understandable, but I still get a little pissed when I think about it.

Due to time and momentum, we never did get another inspector out here. I wonder, though, what a competent house inspector could’ve told us. It would’ve been a long report, that’s for sure…

A lesson that sprang from this and other similar experiences is that some contractors will back out of a job to take easier work elsewhere.
